Mexican Independranks: Top Five Mexican Cocktails

Twitter: @AndreaGompf

Mexican Independence Day is around the corner, and here at the Remezcla offices we have already started celebrating all things Mexico Lindo y Querido. First and foremost: DRINKITY DRANKS. In 2010 Mexico beat out Holland to become the world’s top exporter of cervezas, and although we’re glad the globe shares our enthusiasm for chelas, we’d like to remind the citizens of the world that Mexico has much more to offer when it comes to poniéndote pedo. That’s why we’ve decided to do a roundup of some of the most amazing booze concoctions that have come out of Mexico. Check out our top five below!

1-margTHE MARGARITA: It’s a classic for a reason, people. This slightly sour and totally refreshing tequila, lime and triple sec combination is like a day at the beach in a glass.

Ingredients:
Lime slice, 1/2 inch thick, for salting glass
Salt
2 ounces tequila blanco
1 ounce Cointreau
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
A glass filled with ice

1-palomaLA PALOMA: Another tequila-based cocktail (que sorpresa…). This one is mixed with refresco de toronja (grapefruit-flavored soda) and served on the rocks with a lime wedge.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces tequila blanco
4 ounces Mexican Squirt soda (or 1 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and 3 ounces lemon-lime soda)
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice (half a lime)
A glass filled with ice

1-adelitaADELITA: I don’t know who Adelita is, but she must have been una chingona. Five parts tequila and one part Kahlúa (with just a dash of lemon), this drink kicks. Hard.

Ingredients:
2 1/2 ounces tequila
1 ounce Kahlúa
The juice of 1/4 of a lemon
A glass filled with ice

1-sunriseTEQUILA SUNRISE: We know, we know. This one isn’t ACTUALLY Mexican. But like the Caesar Salad (which is not actually Italian!), this tequila, grenadine and orange juice concoction is often attributed to the wrong country of origin. Since many a Mexican restaurant serves them in the ol’ US of A, we figured we’d include it. Just humor us.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces tequila
3 ounces orange juice
1 teaspoon grenadine
A glass filled with ice

1-micheladaMICHELADA: Okayyy, this one has beer in it. But how could we leave it off the list? Spicy, lime-y, yummy… this cocktail comes in many iterations, and we’ve never had one we didn’t like. Since there are so many versions, however, the ingredients listed below are only a loose guide. Make it a tu gusto!

Ingredients:
1 12 ounce Pilsner (Mexican, obvio)
salsa picante (bottled) to taste
1-3 ounces tomato juice or Clamato juice
Worcestershire sauce
1 ounce lime juice
A glass filled with ice
