On Sunday, transport yourself to Venezuela’s Caribbean coastal town of Naiguatá. Its signature musical group, La Sardinia de Naiguatá performs for free at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. The group which has been going strong for over 50 years was founded by trumpeter Ricardo Díaz, and combines Afro-Caribbean drumming traditions with brass, electric bass, keyboard, and women’s chorus. Check out the Smithsonian’s mini-documentary on the group, and their sound, which Diaz describes as a fusion of Dominican and Venezuelan merengues below.
The group Rumbaché opens with their fusion of salsa, timba, bomba, and funk.
