Acclaimed Flamenco producer Javier Limon showcases the vocal talents of internationally renowned Brazilian singer Luisa Maita at Stern Grove.
Buika, Spain’s hottest new singer, is a true revelation in Spanish contemporary music. Through her acclaimed recordings and appearances, including her triumphant New York debut in 2007, she has enthralled audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with her intoxicating blend of flamenco, jazz, soul and Afro-Cuban rhythms. The daughter of political refugees from the African nation of Equatorial Guinea, she grew up in a Gypsy neighborhood on the Spanish island of Mallorca. In this program, part of Buika’s first US tour, she performs music from her recent CD El Ultimo Trago (The Last Drink), her tribute album to Mexican diva Chavela Vargas. Guitarist Javier Limon appears as special guest with her ensemble.
Brazilian singer Luisa Maita opens the afternoon with modern samba sounds. Dubbed as “The New Voice of Brazil“, Luisa Maita is the latest Brazilian export to captivate the American audience. Fans of Bebel Gilberto and Céu will find much to love in Maita’s tropical, forward-looking sound, and her sensual yet soulful voice begs comparisons with everyone from Billie Holiday and Sade to Feist, St. Vincent, and Cat Power.
