Taking their name from the classic Smiths song, Girl in a Coma started in San Antonio, TX, with bassist Jenn Alva, drummer Phanie Diazand, and Nina Diaz as singer, guitarist, and songwriter. The trio played for several years after getting the attention of Morrissey music director Boz Boorer, who invited the trio to London to record their first demo. Soon after, Girl in a Coma found themselves featured in a television documentary about emerging Latino bands. The occasion gave the band the opportunity to join the Blackheart Records label and release their critically acclaimed debut album, Both Before I’m Gone, in May 2007. They will be making a stop at The Independent in support of their new album Trio B.C.
