Raúl Midón’s style, made up of soaring vocals and rapid-fire, flamenco-inspired guitars, has been compared to that of Richie Havens and José Feliciano. But then, thanks to his jazz inflections and socially conscious R&B-like lyrics, he’s also being compared to Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield. You can make up your mind regarding what he really sounds like this May 2 at the Palace of Fine Arts, as part of SFJAZZ’s 11th Annual Spring Season.
Blinded in an incubator soon after birth, Midón initially earned a living singing backing vocals for Latin acts including Shakira and Julio Iglesias. After a string of his own critically acclaimed albums, Midón relocated from New York to Los Angeles and has begun an association with Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein (of Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel and Herbie Hancock fame). Their first production is titled Synthesis, and it’s already out in Europe and slated for U.S. release this year.
