Los Boleros revives classics such as “Dos Gardenias,” “Cuarto de Tula” and “Bésame Mucho” with their cubanísimo mix of son montuno, son cubano, bolero, salsa, cumbia and merengue. The Bay Area-based band will be playing live at the Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center.
The male and female singers are backed by traditional Old Havana instrumentation, with solos on flute, saxophone, violin and smoking tres cubano. “Imagine going back in time to Ricky Ricardo’s Tropicana Havana, then take a ride to the Buena Vista Social Club,” the band says. Los Boleros are founders Rudy Furlan and Ivan Chancay, plus lead singers Felix Samuel and Zareen, saxophonist David Somers and violinist Jeannie McKennzie. Also, there’s Eugene Warren, Daniel Fabricant and Ayla Dávila on the bass, as well as percussionists Dominic Cabrera and Jake Lawlor.
