Come explore Brazilian music through film as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents a documentary series in conjunction with the When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art exhibit. Today’s featured film is Discovery of Brazil (Descobrimento do Brasil).
“Before When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960 to the Present winds up on Jan 31, we offer this four-part series of high-energy documentaries, and a fascinating curio from 1937, looking at different aspects of one of the most influential musical cultures in the world.
An early example of Brazilian cinema, this 1937 film depicts the perilous journey of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s journey from Portugal to Brazil. But the real star is the beautiful cantata by Heitor Villa Lobos that permeates the film. (1937, 62 min, digital video restoration) “-YBCA
