Destani Wolf, a Mexican-American born and raised in Berkeley, was into Aretha Franklin and Los Panchos as a child. It’s no surprise, then, that her current music is as soulful and alluring as it is. Wolf shakes things up by adding reggae to her musical mix. At times she’s India Arie-ish, at times you can hear some Sade (especially in her voice). Check her out this Saturday at the Berkeley Jazz School.
“In 2003 the John Santos album SF BAY, on which she added vocals, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Also in that same year, her former band O-Maya (currently re-grouped as AguaLibre) won a SF Weekly “Best of the Bay” award for best Latin/hip-hop band, and her vocals were featured on My Flesh and Blood, an HBO documentary that won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival. Benny Rietveld (Santana), Bobi Cespedes, The Pharcyde, Crown City Rockers, The 88 and Omar Sosa are among her many musical collaborators.” — From Destani Wolf’s website
