Filmmaker Denise Zmekhol will present and discuss her 2008 documentary, Children of the Amazon, in which she returns to the Amazon in search of the indigenous Surui and Negarote children she had photographed 15 years before.
A native of São Paulo currently based in the Bay Area, she recorded her personal encounters and eloquently charts the destruction, ecological as well as cultural, brought about by decades of deforestation. Her account of the past decades includes the story of activist Chico Mendes and a recognition that the future of the Amazon rainforest is intricately linked to that of the Earth. Zmekhol will also screen a follow-up short, Trading Bows and Arrows for Laptops. In English and Portuguese with English subtitles.
