Mexico City experimental artist Artemio Narro (b. 1976) is the self-proclaimed “Rolls Royce” of Mexican contemporary art, now audiences have the chance to judge for themselves with Artemio’s new exhibition Hollywoodpedia, a large-scale video-installation in SF’s own Galeria de la Raza.
Focused on portraying Hollywood’s construction and representation of human emotion and thought in feature films , Narro’s research and construction for his piece involved watching nearly 1500 Hollywood films, taking him over the last year and a half to accomplish.
The installation will comprise of twelve individual screens, with each communicating one of the concepts Narro has chosen to depict the human condition through a collage of distinct Hollywood moments, ergo using Hollywood as his encyclopedia. Narro chose the films based on a survey carried out to Americans concerning the most memorable and popular movies, it is in a way a portrait of the American condition through the lens of Hollywood cinema.
Among the twelve specific concepts are love, forgiveness, death and war.
